Application Deployment Strategies

Application downtime is costly, but most companies aim to mitigate it or, better likely, remove it. You can monitor the technological release of new product releases via deployment trends, as well as the rollout of new features to customers. You can also release features to small consumer groups and validate them with much less difficulty in development than if you had them available in general.

The pattern of deployment you chose primarily depends on your company objectives. It’s not necessarily exposed instantly to consumers when you launch a service. Deployment techniques occur for the simultaneous provisioning of several service versions. In automating the release of new applications, the deployment patterns give you versatility. What plan is right for you depends on your priorities and goals.

Blue/Green Deployment Pattern

A load balancer guides traffic to the active (Blue) area in the Blue/Green deployment pattern when you are updating the (Green) standby environment. Blue/green deployment allows cutover to happen quickly with no downtime. Via changing the load balancer to guide traffic back into the blue environment, you can roll back at any point during the deployment process. After you notice a problem, the consequence of downtime is limited to the time it takes to switch traffic to the blue environment. Blue/green deployment ensures that no resources supporting the blue environment are affected by spinning up a parallel green environment. Your launch burden is minimized by this distinction.

Canary Deployment Pattern

A canary deployment consists of shifting production traffic gradually from version A to version B. The traffic is typically split based on weight. 90 percent of requests, for instance, go to version A, 10 percent to version B.

This method is mostly used when the tests are lacking or not reliable or if the stability of the new release on the platform is untrustworthy. Canary releases are a good way for users to release experimental or beta functions and collect their feedback.

Rolling Updates Deployment Pattern

In a rolling update deployment, instead of updating each application instance simultaneously, you update a subset of running application instances. Every server node in the environment is taken offline in a rolling update and upgraded.

Manual or automatic smoke testing determines whether the application is functioning as expected after a node is upgraded. If the application is up and running correctly, its server node is made available for user traffic, and the next node is made available for user traffic. To upgrade, the node is taken offline. A gradual way to reach zero-downtime implementations is a rolling upgrade. For implementations that you intend to implement fast, rolling updates perform well, so you can minimize the effect on consumers.

Recreate Deployment Pattern

You completely scale down the current application version with a recreated deployment until you scale up the latest application version. The value of the recreation approach is its simplicity. You should not need to treat more than one iteration of the software in parallel, so you eliminate backward compatibility problems with your data and software.

In many ways, you can deploy and release the application. There are benefits and pitfalls to each strategy. The right solution boils down to your company’s desires and limitations.
